Morrissey on Broadway May 8, 2019

Morrissey, the man, the myth, the legend, gave impeccable performances during his Broadway residency. He is an artist entirely in control and comfortable on stage. Despite switching up his set nightly, requiring a mastery of 40 songs, Morrissey was flawless. His band, like the man himself, is prepared, tight and exciting. Morrissey selected songs spanning his 37 year career. The Lunt Fontanne Theatre's seating had light duty as the audience was on its feet from the dimming of the house lights. As usual it was beloved Morrissey and his equally loved supporters enjoying one another's company and ecstatically rejoicing in his unsurpassed catalogue. Morrissey graciously accepted fan offerings, reached out to shake hands and gave a warm hug to a young woman who jumped up on the stage with his encouraging words of "nearly there, nearly there, nearly there" during his encore tune, "First of the Gang to Die". As his fan struggled to make it up, Morrissey pulled her to him. Morrissey began the night saying, "Don't tell me I can't sing. I have to sing!" If he was feeling poorly no one could tell. With that luscious, mellifluous baritone, Morrissey enunciates every song's lyric with the commitment, style and intensity its meaning deserves. There are no half measures with Morrissey. He performs the old songs with the same energy and purpose as if they were new ones. Morrissey's voice is better than ever, remarkably sounding like one decades younger yet with all the lilting nuance experience brings. Morrissey has charisma to burn. One cannot take one's eyes off of him for fear of missing a word, a move, a gesture, a meaningful intention. Thank you Morrissey for standing your ground and always being artist of integrity. As a young woman said in line in answer to the question, "what is it about Morrissey?" She wistfully looked away and spoke for all of his fans when she said, "I don't know, Morrissey just touches my heart." And he did so on this night for the rest of us 1,502 fans lucky enough to see these shows.
